PARENT TOOLKIT

Here are five steps you can take as a parent interested in supporting comprehensive sexual health education in your school!

STEP 1: Know the Facts

It is extremely important to educate yourself on California’s Education Code and supporting research so you can be knowledgeable when talking to other people about comprehensive sexual health education.

Visit our RESOURCES page to get information about:

  • California’s Education Code
  • Supportive studies on comprehensive sex education
  • Organizations that support comprehensive sex education
  • Where to go for more information on sexual health

STEP 2: Find out what's going on in your School!

To successfully advocate you must get to know your school district. We have provided a helpful search for you to CHECK YOUR DISTRICT so that you may read summaries and analysis on what your school district is teaching. You may also find who your school board members are and links to your district website where you can find out more about your school board.

You should also ask your kids about what they have been taught: what materials were used, when was it taught and who taught it? Tell us what you find out and we can help you use this information to ensure that all schools in your district are receiving appropriate and comprehensive sexual health education.

STEP 3: REACH OUT TO YOUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS

Let your school board members and school administrators know that you are concerned about the type of sexual health education in your school.

CONTACT YOUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS!

We have provided a sample letter for you HERE. With this letter you can let your school board members and administrators know you want your school to teach comprehensive sexual health education!

STEP 4: Attend a School Board Meeting

There is power in numbers. Talk to other parents and faculty in your district who are supportive of comprehensive sexual health education. Utilize your voice as a group of concerned parents and faculty to demand that your district adopt a comprehensive sex education policy. Gather this group together and attend a school board meeting.

If you would like to organize an information session for yourself and other interested parents/faculty please CONTACT US!

In each meeting there will be time for public comments at the begining or the end. This is the time that you will have to speak. When you go to the meeting tell the school board who you are and that you would like them to adopt a comprehensive sexual health education policy. Come prepared! Print out any helpful documents from our website that you may be able to provide to your school board members at this meeting. Direct them to our website if they have any questions.

STEP 5: Keep the Pressure on!

It may take more than one try to get your school board to listen to you and other parents, but try not to lose hope.

KEEP THE PRESSURE ON!
  • Ask parents and students in the district to send in letters to the School Board
  • Write letters to your local newspaper telling them of the situation in your district. This may seem scary at first, but we can help! Contact us for more information and we can provide talking points or sample letters
  • Attend a second school board meeting to find out what the status is

Use us as a resource. Contact us if you are having trouble with any of the above steps or have any questions. We are here to help and want to see all schools in Orange & San Bernardino Counties teaching comprehensive sexual health education.
